Chapter 16: Day Five

Lorena's POV

Shelby's dinner started at seven, and I walked up her front path at seven twenty with three men in work jackets behind me.

Lane carried a flat gray case under one arm.

His helper and a second installer carried nothing but their keys.

"You're sure about the crew?" Lane said low.

"You're my installers. She invited the whole committee, and she didn't specify who had to be in a suit."

"I'm in a suit."

"Under the jacket."

"Fair."

Brett opened the door.

He wore the charcoal jacket he had worn to his mother's funeral, and he'd shaved so close his jaw looked sore.

His eyes went to Lane and the two men, then to me.

"Hi," he said.

"Hi."

He held the door and did not touch me, and he did not look at my stomach, either.

Yesterday morning he had stood in my studio at seven and told me four sentences about Shelby's kitchen.

She has my signed papers. She's ready with a story. She'll tell you she knows about the baby. Don't go alone.

He had not said anything else about the baby, and I had noticed him not saying it.

Now he kept his voice to the hallway.

"Twelve at the table. The committee chair, the treasurer, a couple who own the lumber yard, the people from the bank."

"And the screen?"

"On the wall of the dining room. It's been playing a picture of the lake all afternoon. At eight it switches to something she's calling the housewarming reel."

"Thank you."

I walked into the dining room.

The table had been set in cream and gold, with the name cards in her careful hand, and mine sat beside Brett's, one seat down from the head.
