Chapter 17: Restore Previous Version
"What pictures?" Shelby said, still smiling.
"The ones on your wall."
"Lorena, sit down. You're upset."
"I made the folder those slides come from," I said. "I gave you the login myself, so I can open it."
I touched my phone.
On the dining room wall, the slide of Lane and me at the bar flickered once.
It came back without the crop.
The whole bar was in it, wider than before.
Shelby's gold sleeve reached into the left of the frame, and her arm was around my waist.
The rail between Lane and me was there, a solid brass bar with a foot of air above it.
"That's the same photograph," I said. "This is how it looks before she cut herself out."
Nobody at the table spoke.
I touched the screen again.
The next slide flipped to its first version, a lobby table with me alone in front of a cup of coffee and a receipt, and an empty chair across from me.
"This is the Carrington lobby," I said. "Shelby sat in that chair, took the picture and went to the restroom."
Down at the foot of the table, Lane sat with a quote in his hand.
"In the edit, he's at my elbow," I said. "In the real picture, he's across the room reading a bid."
The treasurer put down his fork.
"Shelby," the committee chair said. "What is this?"
"It's a misunderstanding," Shelby said. "She's trying to make me look like I'm lying."
"Fourteen files," I said. "Fourteen edits, same account, same night. I can show you the log."
I held my phone up and the log came up on the wall, a plain list of dates, and her name beside every one.
