Chapter 19: Paid in Full
At seven in the morning Brett's truck was parked outside the studio with the windows fogged.
He had slept in it.
My shop manager let me know by pointing out the front window with a pair of scissors.
"There's a man out there with a thermos," she said. "Do I call someone?"
"No."
"Do I bring him a coffee?"
"No."
She put the scissors down and brought him a coffee anyway.
I watched through the glass as she tapped on his window, and he rolled it down and took it with both hands.
He didn't come in.
At eight he knocked on the door, and I let him in because the glass was thin and the street was awake.
He stood just inside the mat.
His shirt was the same one he had worn to the dinner, and he had shaved with the truck mirror and missed a patch.
"I'm not here to ask for anything," he said. "I want to tell you what I did this morning, and then I'll go."
"Go ahead."
"I paid the two men who walked out." He glanced at me. "A week's wages each, plus the days at Shelby's, out of my own account. I drove to both their houses."
I said nothing, so he went on.
"I sold the boat."
I looked at him.
For six years he had worked on that boat every second Sunday, a little wooden runabout his father had left him.
"To who?"
"A man in Lakeview who's been asking since March."
"Brett."
"It covered my partner's note and what I owe Lane for hanging the wall." He took a folded invoice from his shirt pocket. "I promised to hang it myself. He did it. So the bill is mine."
