Chapter 8: I Know About You and Him

The lawyer's office smelled of burnt coffee and printer paper.

She was a woman in her fifties with a legal pad and no small talk.

I put the receipt on her desk first.

She read it, then asked for the committee's letter, the date of the auction and the name of the account the money came from.

"Is the money marital?" she asked.

"It came from his company's owner distribution."

"Then half of it is arguably yours."

She wrote the figure down and underlined it.

"What else?"

I hadn't meant to say it.

"I'm five weeks pregnant. He doesn't know."

She put down her pen.

"Do you want him to know?"

"Not yet. Not because I'm hiding. I want to find out who he is when he isn't being handed a reason."

"That's your right," she said. "I'd do three things. Keep every copy of every document. Don't move out of the house. And don't announce anything until you've decided what you want."

"What do I want?"

"That's the only question I can't answer for you."

I thanked her and drove to the studio.

At eight fifty the Carrington's purchasing manager walked in with a tablet under her arm.

I had set the samples out on the long table, with the guest-room drapes on the wall and the lobby swatches pinned in rows.
