Chapter 13: The Offer I Never Got

The door clicked shut behind Reina, and Chiaki was alone with the mirrors.

She looked at herself in all of them.

A woman in a dark blue dress with her hair coming loose, who had been a dowry.

She washed her hands for a long time.

Then she unlocked the door and walked out into the corridor.

Kaname was standing at the far end of it, by the elevators, with his hands in his pockets.

"I told you not to wait outside," she said, when she reached him.

"You did. So I waited at the other end."

He looked at her face, and something in his own changed.

"The car," he said. "Not the reception."

He drove himself. A dark grey sedan, very clean, that smelled faintly of yuzu because there was a box of monaka in the glove compartment.

They went down to the bay and along it, past the dark warehouses and the lit-up cranes, nowhere in particular.

Chiaki told him in four sentences.

She'd had a lot of practice making things short.

Kaname didn't say anything.

The orange lights of the expressway slid over his face and off it, over and off.

When she got to the date on the agreement, his hands tightened on the wheel.
