Chapter 16: Haruka's Box
"They said it was a breach of confidentiality," Haruka said. "The expense records."
She was sitting on the edge of her bathtub with a towel around her shoulders.
That was where she had been when the call came, and she hadn't moved since.
Her son was asleep. Her husband was on a twenty-four-hour shift.
Chiaki had come across the city in a taxi at six in the morning in yesterday's clothes and Kaname's scarf.
"They called you on a Sunday night to fire you?"
"An email at eleven. A call at five." Haruka wiped her nose on the towel. "Don't come in. Your security pass has been deactivated. Your belongings may be collected Tuesday at ten."
"Then we'll collect them Tuesday at ten."
"Chiaki, I can't walk back in there."
"You won't be walking in alone."
Chiaki spent Monday morning in front of Tsukishiro's board for forty minutes with nothing in her hands.
They asked her everything. She answered everything.
At the end, the oldest director, who hadn't spoken once, asked her what clause twelve said.
When she told him, he nodded and said that would do.
