Chapter 11: The Addendum

I was sitting on the edge of Nathan's bed, holding the envelope, when my phone rang.

It was the clinic.

"Ms. Hruska? This is the nurse from the Allegheny Fertility Center. I'm so glad I caught you."

"Is something wrong with the baby?"

"No, no. Everything looks perfect at the eight-week mark. I'm calling about a form."

I put the envelope back under the paperweight.

"What form?"

"There's an addendum we need you to initial before your next scan. For the file. It's an acknowledgment from the carrier about the posthumous use of banked material."

The room tilted a little.

"The what?"

"The consent for the late Mr. Brennick's sample. Mr. Gavin Brennick signed as designated person last month, and we just need yours, as carrier, to complete the record."

"The late Mr. Brennick."

"Yes. Nathan." Her voice slowed. "Ms. Hruska, I'm so sorry. I assumed you'd been told. It's in the contract summary. The lawyer said you'd gone over it."

I stood up.

I couldn't remember deciding to.

"The lawyer said the intended father's banked material," I said. "I asked Gavin, and he said he'd been careful. Eight years ago."

"Mr. Gavin Brennick didn't bank anything with us."

The nurse stopped.

I heard her breathe.

"I'm going to transfer you to the practice manager," she said, very carefully. "I shouldn't have said that."
