Chapter 13: Her Terms
Gavin drove through the gates and parked under the portico with the engine still running.
Neither of us moved.
"Sunday," I said.
He turned his head.
"You have until Sunday dinner. If you haven't told Harold by the time the soup is served, I'll tell him over the soup."
"That's cruel."
"It's a deadline. You're a CEO. You've heard of them."
"He's eighty-four, Vera."
"And he's been walking past a locked room for four years because nobody would tell him the truth about it."
His jaw worked.
"Sunday," he said. "I'll tell him myself, at his table, before you have to."
"Good."
I got out into the rain, and he held the front door because there was nothing else for him to hold.
I climbed the stairs with my wet sneakers squeaking on every step.
At the top he said my name.
"Not tonight," I said.
"I only wanted to say I'm sorry."
"I heard you in the car. I believe you. It doesn't change what I'm doing."
I went into my room and turned the key in the brass lock on my side of the connecting door.
