Chapter 14: The Long Night

The ambulance took nine minutes to reach the house.

Gavin knelt on the glass the whole time with two fingers on his grandfather's neck.

He didn't speak.

He just counted under his breath, and I knew he was counting a pulse.

Spencer's wife took the boys upstairs.

Spencer stood in the doorway of the dining room with his phone in his hand and did nothing at all.

At the hospital they rolled Harold through a pair of doors and the doors swung shut.

A nurse pointed us to a waiting room with orange chairs and a television bolted to the wall.

Gavin sat down, got up, sat down again.

There was a cut on his palm from the glass, and he hadn't noticed.

I took his hand and wiped it with a napkin from my pocket.

"He was going to say it was all right," Gavin said. "Nathan's name. He was happy."

"I know."

"I had the sentence. I had the whole sentence."

"Gavin."

"I waited four days and he"

"Stop."

He stopped.

The doors at the end of the hall banged.

Spencer walked in with his jacket over his arm and his eyes already on me.

"Family only," he said. "The nurse says family only for the cardiac unit."

"I'm family," I said.

"You're a contract."

"Spencer," said Gavin.

"No, I want it clear, cousin. I'm not doing this in front of a doctor."
