Chapter 15: Nathan's Chair
Harold woke at ten on Monday morning, cranky, hooked to three machines, and demanding coffee.
"No," said the nurse.
"I own the building the machine was bought for," said Harold.
"Still no."
He looked past her and found Gavin in the doorway, grey-faced, in yesterday's shirt with the buttons missing.
He looked at me behind Gavin.
"Close the door," he said. "And get that woman a chair, she's pregnant."
The nurse sighed and went out.
I took the vinyl chair by the bed.
Gavin stayed on his feet at the foot of it, with both hands on the rail.
"Grandpa. I was going to tell you at dinner."
"I know you were. I saw your face, and then I fell on my soup. Terrible timing. I apologize."
"Don't."
"Sit down, Gavin."
"I need to say this standing."
"Then say it standing, but stop shaking the bed."
Gavin let go of the rail.
"The baby is Nathan's."
The room hummed.
The monitor beeped at a steady, neat pace, and the old man's face did not move.
