Chapter 23: Born
I pushed for twenty-two minutes, and I called Gavin four words my mother would have washed my mouth out for.
He took it like a gift.
"That's it," said the doctor. "He's crowning. One more, Vera."
"I can't."
"You can."
"I carry eight plates," I said, to nobody, "I can carry"
Gavin put his hand over mine.
Mila, at the foot of the bed, was holding my other hand and the gold pen, and weeping openly.
I pushed.
There was a long burning rush, and then a loss.
Then a thin furious cry filled the room.
"It's a boy," said the doctor.
Nobody spoke.
The nurse wrapped him in a striped blanket and I held out my arms before anyone could tell me not to.
He was small and red and furious, with a damp tuft of black hair and a fist already clenched.
He weighed five pounds eleven ounces and he looked at the ceiling lights with an expression of deep offense.
I put him against my chest.
His mouth worked.
