Supper was pot roast, and Vivian burned the rolls.
She had insisted on making them.
She stood in the kitchen door with the blackened tray held out in both hands and her face as red as a sunburn.
"I read the recipe twice," she said.
"It said eat them while warm," said Posy, and took one anyway.
Russell put his fork down and began to laugh, and could not stop.
We sat at the long table in the dining room for the first time since I had come to the house.
All of us, in a row, with the cove going dark behind the windows.
Russell sat at the head, with his sleeves rolled up.
I sat at the foot, because Posy had decided I would.
Ricky sat on my left, and Vivian sat on his far side, because he had put her there.
"You're going to lose at checkers after supper," he told her.
"I know," Vivian said.
"Good. Some people argue."
He gave her a flat look, the kind he had once given me.
