Chapter 10: Sixty-One
"If he says it in front of Teddy," I told Alistair in the car, "you can do whatever you like."
He was buttoning Teddy's tiny tweed jacket, which his grandmother had sent from Edinburgh for exactly this sort of occasion.
"Whatever I like."
"Within the law."
"You're very restrictive." He got the last button. "There. Now he looks like a bank manager."
"Bus," Teddy said, outraged, because the bus was not in the jacket.
Alistair produced it from his own pocket.
Teddy took it and forgave everyone.
The upstairs room at the Somerset Club was all dark wood and old oil portraits of men who'd owned ships.
Forty people stood around with drinks.
Uncles I hadn't seen since my mother's funeral. Men from the port. My father's banker and his wife. Laurel's friends from brunch, one still wearing the white sweater with a sticky patch over the heart where she'd scrubbed off my label.
Laurel had done the room in pink and gold.
There was a banner.
"61 & FAMILY!"
When we came in with Teddy, the room did that thing rooms had started doing when Alistair walked into them in Boston.
It went quiet, and then it pretended it hadn't.
My father came over and shook Alistair's hand.
He looked at Teddy in his tweed jacket for a long second.
"Hello there," he said.
Teddy held up the bus.
My father didn't know what to do with that.
He patted it and went back to the bar.
Dorian was by the window with a scotch.
He didn't come over.
He had a thick white envelope sticking out of his breast pocket, and he kept touching it.
Laurel came straight at us, kissed the air near my face, and smiled down at Teddy with all her teeth.
"Look at him. In a little jacket. Isn't that sweet." She lowered her voice. "Enjoy dinner."
We sat.
