Chapter 20: Flowers

"No," I said, and started to close the door.

Dorian put his hand flat on it.

Not hard. Just enough.

"Two minutes. Please, Faye. Two minutes and I'll never come back."

I looked at his hand.

He took it off the door.

"Two minutes," I said. "On the stoop. Not inside."

I took the chain off and stepped out barefoot onto the warm stone, and pulled the door to behind me.

Marlborough Street was waking up.

A man walking a dog. A woman with a coffee and a yoga mat. The old lady next door, already on her stoop with the newspaper, already looking.

Laurel's pile was still on the sidewalk from yesterday, dewy, the white ottoman gone gray at the edges.

Dorian held out the peonies.

I didn't take them.

He held them a moment longer and then laid them on the top step between us.

"I know what I did," he said.

"Good."

"No, listen. I know. I've been sitting in a motel by the airport since she threw me out, doing nothing but knowing it." His voice shook. "I loved you. I did. I loved you for four years and I sold you for three hundred grand and a promotion, and I spent it all on games I lost. The whole thing, Faye. It was gone in eighteen months."

"I didn't ask what you did with it."
