On Tuesday afternoon, two men with a drill took the tinted film off the glass wall in Studio B.

Devon had ordered it done on Monday, and he had paid for it himself.

When the last strip peeled away, the back booth was just a room with a chair and a screen.

From inside it, I could see all the way into the live room.

For the first time in three years, anyone standing at the microphone could see me.

"Too much?" Devon asked from the other side of the glass.

"Ask me after I sit down."

I walked into the live room and stood beside him at the single microphone.

It was a good mic, a warm old ribbon, with room for two faces if they stood close.

The engineer sat at the main board and gave us a thumbs-up.

"Now the glass is clear," he said. "You can finally watch me work."

"I'll try not to correct you."

I had talked to a detective on Monday, a patient woman with a notebook.

She had told me Hank's second login came from a rented storage unit in Burbank, and that he planned to sell the masters.

"Let him," she had said. "A thief who sells is a thief who gets caught."
