Chapter 13: Plain Words
I got as far as the middle of the yard before my legs stopped.
The muster had ended.
Soldiers crossed the stones around me, and none of them looked at my face.
I stood there holding my mother's cord, and I couldn't take another step away from the tower.
I turned around.
I climbed all the stairs again, as slowly as a woman climbing to a gallows.
Kieran hadn't moved.
He stood where I had left him, in the middle of the room, with his hat still in his hand.
I walked straight up to him and hit him across the face as hard as I could.
The crack of it rang off the stone.
His head turned with the blow, and he let it.
He didn't lift a hand.
A red mark bloomed along his cheek.
"Again," he said quietly.
I hit him again.
Then I stood there with my palm burning and my breath tearing in and out.
"Tell me all of it," I said. "From the beginning."
"If you make a single excuse, I'll walk out and you will never see me again."
"I won't make one."
"Start."
He set the hat on the desk.
