Chapter 14: Skyfall
The Skyfall Cliffs were a mile of broken stone with nothing under them.
Two hundred feet down, a river ran through the gorge, white as milk with foam.
Between the cliff edges, narrow spans of rock stretched across the drop.
The nine entrants who remained stood in the grey dawn light with their beasts and their ropes.
I stood at the end of the line.
Kieran Falkirk stood at the start, with the Watch drawn up behind him.
He had not slept either.
I could tell by how still he held his shoulders.
I didn't look at him once.
"The Skyfall Run," the herald called. "Cross the spans to the Beacon Stone on the far rim."
"Entrants are roped in threes. A rope may not be cut by the one who wears it."
His eyes slid to me.
"Any entrant may take another's beast, rope or place along the way. The hunt-eligible may be taken by any."
Nobody laughed this time.
Six of them looked at me.
I looked at the rope the Watch handed me, and then at the name on the lot.
