Chapter 21: Ask, Don't Order
The crate hit the platform boards with a bang, and Bran dropped.
The rope snapped taut, and he kicked once in the air.
I screamed his name.
I don't remember choosing to run.
I was halfway across the sand with my hand on the bell.
The bell was ringing, loud and high, and everyone in the Arena could hear it.
Then I stopped, because I remembered what Cassian had said in the vault.
*If you were in the Arena. On the sands where it died. If you asked.*
And I remembered the one word stamped under my mother's bell.
I took my hand off it.
I stood in the open, in front of twelve thousand people and a man hanging in the air, and I stopped ringing and stopped running.
I lifted my head.
"Please," I said.
It wasn't loud.
I didn't use the bell, and I didn't give an order.
