Chapter 18: Ash

"Morvran. Up. Fire."

He was awake before I finished saying it.

We were dressed in under a minute, which I'd have laughed at any other morning.

Smoke was pouring up through the gaps in the floorboards. The ladder hole glowed orange.

"The dog," I said. "The kittens."

"I'll go first."

"You'll go first and get the door. I know where the crate is."

He went down the ladder through the smoke.

I went after him with my sleeve over my mouth.

The back half of the shed was burning.

The tar on the old walls had caught, and the flames were running up them in sheets.

The dog was on his rope by the stove, barking himself hoarse.

Morvran kicked the front door off its hinges. Cold air rushed in, and the fire roared up to meet it.

I cut the dog's rope with my lancet and shoved him at the door.

The kitten crate was in the back corner, under the shelf of salves.

The shelf was on fire.

I wrapped my skirt round my hands, grabbed the crate and ran.

A bottle of spirit burst behind me with a crack. Something hot hit my back.

Then Morvran's arm was round my waist.

He carried me and the crate out through the doorway, into the snow.

We fell together on the shingle.

The mother cat came out of the crate spitting, all five kittens alive and mewing beside her.
