Chapter 19: Knockout

The quarterfinal was the first warm day of spring.

The stands around the ring were packed. Students, teachers, and a whole row of Lowtown fishermen with a banner Kerensa had painted.

It said GO MUD SNAKE.

"I'm going to eat that banner," Morvran said.

"You'll eat nothing. You'll fly."

Our first pair was a griffin and her Warden, a big fourth-tower girl with a crooked nose and a good laugh.

I knew the griffin.

It was the one from my practical. The one with the lead weight in its second stomach.

It had put on weight and grown all its feathers back. It was glossy and furious and magnificent.

Its Warden came over before the start and shook my hand.

"You fixed him," she said. "Nobody else could find what was wrong. I'm still going to try to win."

"I'd be insulted if you didn't."

The Headmistress dropped her hand.

The griffin went straight up, the way griffins do, to come down on us from the sun.

Morvran went up after it.

The whole crowd gasped.

Nobody had seen him fly. They'd heard stories from Lowtown. They hadn't believed them.

The black wings opened over the ring.
