Chapter 22: The Gate
The Hold's courtyard was full of black cloaks when the gate swung open.
Every lord of Skarreth stood in rows before the steps, in mourning, and Leofric stood above them with a mourning band on his arm.
"My lords," he was saying, "we have lost our duke in the snow, and the dragon's line goes with him."
He raised a scroll.
"But the line has an heir, and the heir needs a hand to guide him. By the writ, I am that hand."
Hooves rang on the cobbles behind him.
Leofric turned.
Aldric rode through the gate on a grey horse, with Linnea beside him on a second, a sling across her chest holding a sleeping child.
The healer came behind with the other in a wicker basket.
The black cloaks rippled.
Someone dropped a staff.
Someone else said, very softly, "The duke."
"A dead man does not ride," Aldric said, and his voice carried over the stones.
