Chapter 14: Ask Him Again

Livia's POV

I waited until the hall outside my room went quiet.

Then I put in the earbuds Philip had left on the tray and pressed play.

My own voice came into my head, tired and brisk, a little hoarse.

"It's me. If you're hearing this, you've lost something, and I'm sorry. I'm going to be quick, because I'm no good at this."

I pulled the blanket up to my chin.

"Philip is your friend. He is not your boyfriend, whatever anyone tells you. Bruno will lie to you for your own good, so ask him twice. Eat something. Check the card in your pocket."

There was a pause on the recording, and I heard myself swallow.

"There's a man. His name is Adriano Scalise. You'll find him difficult."

I stopped breathing.

"He doesn't know how to say it. He never has. If he's in the room, ask him again."

The recording went on a moment longer.

"Don't let anyone decide for you. Not Philip, not the doctors. Not him. And not me, either, if I've turned into someone who does that."

It ended there.

I sat very still with my own voice gone out of my ears.

I had said his name, and it had meant nothing to me.

It was only a name, like Zurich or levetiracetam.

I should have cried.

I was angry instead, at a woman who was gone and had left me orders.

Philip found me like that when he came back with two coffees.

He read my face, set the cups down, and sat on the end of the bed.
