Chapter 10: Leverage

Channing's office was on the forty-fifth floor, and it had a window the size of a wall.

He sat behind a glass desk with his feet up and the photo on a tablet in front of him, grinning at it.

Paulette stood at his shoulder.

The security man with the earpiece stood by the door.

"Sit," said Channing.

"I'll stand."

"Suit yourself." He turned the tablet around. "That's a very nice shot. The bite mark really makes it."

"What do you want?"

"Straight to business. I admire that."

He lowered his feet and leaned on the desk.

"Here's what I want, Noelle. I want to know what my cousin's doing. Where he goes, who he calls, what he says in the dark at night when he thinks no one's listening."

"You want me to spy on him."

"I want you to be a good friend to both of us," said Channing warmly. "You're at his elbow every day. You have the run of show for the gala, the stage plan, the music, the order of speeches. I'd like a copy of everything an hour after he sees it."

"Why?"

"Because he's not well."

"He's perfectly well."

"Is he?" Channing tilted his head. "Does he sleep? Does he have nightmares? Does he sit in that dark room for sixteen hours and talk to himself?"

"No."

"You'd know, wouldn't you?"

Paulette made a small satisfied sound.

My face went hot.

"I won't do it," I said.

"Think carefully."
