Gianna's POV

I put the paper gown down on a chair and walked into the waiting room in my socks.

Paola came out behind me with the canvas bag on her shoulder and her phone already in her hand.

Seven faces watched me, and none of them were kind.

Two were capos' wives, and I knew they would repeat every word of this by dinner.

"Valentina," I said. "Say that again, so they can all hear it."

She dabbed her nose.

"I don't want to be cruel," she said. "I only think Mr. Orsini deserves to know whose child he's raising. You were Dario's for eight years. Nobody can say what happened that week."

"I can."

"Gianna, please. Don't make this worse for yourself."

"I'll count it for the room," I said, and I turned to the two wives. "I woke up in the Orsini house on my wedding day and never left it without guards. The gate has a log, and the household has eyes.

"Dario Sabatini has not been alone with me for one minute since that morning.

"The only time he stood within reach of me was at the gate, with iron bars between us."

"People lie about dates," Valentina said.

"The doctor doesn't. She dated this baby to the weeks after my wedding, and she wrote it down."

The nurse at the desk lifted her head and said nothing, and that was answer enough.

One of the wives looked at the floor.

Valentina's face tightened for a moment.

Then she did what she always did, and her chin began to shake.

"I'm just so tired of being the villain," she whispered. "I never asked for any of this. I'm not a thief, and I never hurt a soul."
