Chapter 14: The Hallway
I zoomed in on the little gray suit.
It had a pocket square.
"She's decorating my bedroom for a baby that's locked in your freezer," I said.
August took the phone out of my hand and looked at it for a long time.
"She's not decorating," he said. "She's telling somebody something."
The next morning was Monday, the third of November.
At ten o'clock I was supposed to be lying on a table on the fourth floor with my feet in stirrups, waiting for Davina's baby.
At ten o'clock I was at my own counter, signing a lease.
One year. My name. Market rent, which made my stomach hurt.
Truman's signature at the bottom, shaky and blue.
I wrote a check for the first month out of the Duke Mansion money and put it in the envelope he'd sent.
Annabeth taped a cupcake with a candle to the cash register.
"Happy not-pregnant day," she said.
"That's not a holiday."
"It is now. I'm making it one. Blow."
I blew.
At eleven the bell rang, and a man in a windbreaker asked if I was Juliet Radford.
He handed me a thick envelope and left before I'd finished saying yes.
Chandler's lawyer was asking a judge to lift the clinic's hold on the five embryos and release them to a surrogacy agency in Atlanta.
There was already a carrier under contract.
On page four I found my name.
The former intended recipient has abandoned the embryos and asserts no claim.
They'd sent it to me so I could agree.
The hearing was Tuesday, the second of December, at the courthouse uptown.
"He found another uterus," Annabeth said, reading over my shoulder.
"A rented one," I said. "He needs me quiet about it. So I'm going."
November went fast after that.
The sixteenth came, the day the notice said I had to be out, and I spent it doing a funeral for a retired fire chief, two hundred red carnations in the shape of a badge.
