Chapter 16: Conditions Satisfied

I read it twice.

Then I turned around with it in my hand.

August had found my sweater.

He was standing by the worktable holding it out to me, and he saw the paper, and his whole body went still.

"Where did you get that?"

"Your pocket. Your left pocket." I held it up between two fingers. "What conditions, August?"

"It isn't what it looks like."

"It looks like a board meeting on your father's birthday. With your initial on it." My voice was very calm. I didn't recognize it. "There was only ever one condition. A baby. Born or on the way."

"I know what the condition is."

"Then tell me which one of them you've satisfied."

He put the sweater down on the table, carefully, next to my mother's gardenia.

"My father wrote that," he said. "Not me."

"When?"

He didn't answer fast enough.

Someone knocked on the glass of the green door.

Not a knock.

A flat palm, three times, hard enough to rattle the bell.

"Jules." Chandler's voice came through the blind. "I see his car. Open up. You're going to want this."

I looked down at myself.

August's jacket, and nothing else, and a ribbon burn on my knee.

"Don't," August said quietly. "Let me."

"It's my shop."

I took my sweater and my jeans into the back hall and put them on with my hands shaking.

When I came back out, August had his shirt tucked in and the red velvet rolled back onto its spool, and the agenda was on the worktable where I'd left it.

I unlocked the door.

Chandler came in on a gust of cold air, in a camel coat with the collar up, holding a long white envelope.

He looked at the ribbon on the floor.
