Chapter 19: What He Gave Up
Every face at the table turned to Truman, then to me.
Chandler was grinning.
I picked my coat up off my arm and put it on, one sleeve and then the other.
"He didn't hand anybody anything," I said. "He gave it away. That's a different thing."
Truman stared at me with his mouth working.
"You don't know what you're talking about, girl."
"No," I said. "But I know the difference."
I left before he could answer.
In the elevator I pressed the lobby button five times.
It was dark by the time I got to South End.
I buzzed the loft from the street door.
Nobody answered.
Then the lock clicked open anyway.
The elevator went up six floors, and the loft door at the top stood open an inch.
The loft was dark.
The iron stairs to the roof were lit from above.
He was out by the railing in his suit jacket with no coat, looking at uptown.
The heater wasn't on.
He heard me on the stairs and didn't turn around.
"Annabeth told you," he said.
"Annabeth told me you sit at her bar drinking club soda like a lunatic."
