Chapter 21: The Window
I stopped at the edge of the glass in my socks.
Cold came straight in off Central Avenue.
Out on the street, two red taillights were already turning the corner by the tattoo place.
A gray cinder block lay on the floor by the worktable.
My mother's gardenia was still on the table.
The pot hadn't broken.
The leaves were covered in glass, fine as sugar, glittering in the streetlight.
I called 911 first.
Then I called Annabeth.
"Is anybody hurt?" was the first thing she said.
"No."
"Are you hurt?"
"No. The window."
"I'm coming. Don't touch anything. Put shoes on, Jules. Put shoes on right now, I can hear you standing in it."
I put shoes on.
The police came at twenty to two, a young officer and an older one.
The older one stood on the sidewalk and said it was probably kids, and wrote my name down wrong.
Annabeth pulled up at five to two in her bartender blacks with the bat in the passenger seat and three bar mops in her fist.
She looked at the floor.
