Chapter 8: Never Consummated
I put Annabeth on speaker without meaning to.
August heard all of it.
He was already pulling out his own phone.
"I have a lawyer," he said. "The best family lawyer in the state owes me a favor. She can file a response by Monday."
"No."
"Juliet."
"No." I slid off the island and fixed my hair with the pencil, badly. "If your lawyer answers his lawyer, I'm the woman the rich uncle bought. That's his whole story. I'm not going to hand it to him."
"Then what are you going to do?"
"I'm going to read," I said.
I spent the weekend at the shop with the closed sign up and the county's family court website open on my laptop.
Annabeth brought me coffee and took over the forty centerpieces.
She also brought a book called Divorce for Dummies, which I didn't open, and a bottle of tequila, which I didn't open either.
By Sunday night I had filed my answer and a counter-claim online, by myself.
I'd also printed one more thing.
On Monday at five to nine I walked into the lobby of the Radford Building uptown, in my good black dress and my mother's pearl earrings, with a manila envelope.
The guard at the desk knew my face.
"Mrs. Radford. Is he expecting you?"
"No," I said. "That's the point."
He let me through anyway.
Radford Properties had the whole twelfth floor: white desks in rows, a glass conference room, a framed photo of the old mill on every wall.
Twenty people looked up from their screens.
Chandler was in the glass conference room with four men in suits and a slideshow about a strip mall.
