Chapter 11: What He Was Shown
"Philip!" Lacey called from the porch. "Don't talk to her. Come inside."
She had flung the door wide and stood barefoot on the top step.
Her hair was loose. Her mouth was a thin line.
"Lacey, go in the house," Philip said without turning around.
"She's going to take him!"
"Go in."
It was the first time I had ever heard him say it to her like that.
Lacey looked at the neighbors, then at me. She went in, and left the door open behind her.
Philip closed the car door on the baby and locked it.
Then he walked past me to the old oak at the edge of our lawn, and he waited for me to follow.
The neighbors let us go. A few of them turned back to their tables, pretending to count change.
Clayton stayed by the truck with his hands in his pockets. Dot stood by the mailbox with her chin up.
Under the oak, Philip rubbed his face with both hands.
"Say what you came to say," he said. "Then I'm taking Beckett inside."
"One question."
"Fine."
"When the doctor told you my baby had died, what did he show you?"
He frowned.
"What do you mean, show me?"
"A body. A chart. A bracelet. A blanket. Anything."
"He didn't show me anything. He took me out into the hall."
"Did you go in the room?"
"Nobody went in the room. They said it was quick. They said it was better not to look." His voice dropped. "He put a hand on my shoulder and told me you'd lost the baby, and I was holding Lacey's elbow, because she'd started to double over."
