Chapter 4: Glass

My sister drove five hours to see me, and they let her have twenty minutes.

The visitor room at Larkmont was a narrow booth with a glass wall down the middle and a telephone on each side.

Dot sat down on the far side in her denim work shirt with her braid over one shoulder.

She picked up the phone and said nothing for a while.

"Mel," she said. "You've gotten thin."

"Hi, Dot."

"Philip called me last month. He said you'd had a breakdown after the baby."

"Did he say what kind?"

"He said you hurt a nurse."

"I flipped a card table in a room full of people," I said. "Nobody was touching it. He told you the part that made me sound dangerous."

Dot tilted her head. She had known me forty-two years, and she listened to every word.

"Then tell me what happened," she said. "Tell me all of it, and tell me slow."

I told her slow.

I gave her the driveway and the text, and I watched her count the hours in her head.

My daughter in my bed, seven months along, with her hands on her stomach.

Dot's face did not move until I said that part.

Then her jaw went tight, and she looked down at the counter.

"Lacey?" she said.

"Lacey."

"And you're sure about the baby? You're sure he cried?"

"I heard him, Dot. And last week I watched Lacey carry him out of the lobby in the blanket I sewed. It's blue flannel with a yellow duck. The hem says LIAM."

My sister looked at me for a long moment.

"Philip said you'd say that," she said. "He said you'd say you'd seen the blanket."
