Chapter 17: Eight Months
Mara's POV
Levi lived on the top floor of a narrow building on Russian Hill, and I had never once been inside.
In four years he had never invited me, and I had never asked.
He turned on one lamp and went to make tea, and I stood in the bedroom doorway with my shoes in my hand.
The bed was made with hospital corners. The books on the nightstand were stacked by size.
"I'll find you something to sleep in," he called from the kitchen.
"I'll find it," I said. "Which drawer?"
"Second one down. On the left."
I opened it.
There was a gray T-shirt on top, and under it a flat white jeweler's receipt, folded in thirds.
I shouldn't have unfolded it.
It was dated the ninth of March.
Antique sapphire, old-cut diamonds, a ring size six.
My size.
Under the receipt lay a stack of envelopes held with a rubber band, and every one had my name on the front.
There were nine of them.
The postmark box on each was empty, and each had a date in the corner in his small square hand, one a month, from March to the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.
I took the top one out of the rubber band.
I should not have opened that either.
It was one page long.
It said: I bought it today. I don't know how to ask a woman to leave a man she has not decided to leave. I'll wait until she decides. I'm good at waiting. I'm bad at being useful.
I sat down on the edge of his bed.
The last envelope was dated the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.
It said: If she ever walks through my door, I will make her tea with honey and milk and not say anything at all.
He came to the doorway with a mug in each hand.
