Chapter 6: Front Door

By ten o'clock Saturday morning I was behind the counter at Linden & Rye.

There was flour to my elbows and a line out the door.

Bridget Quinn slid a tray of lemon scones into the case and looked at me sideways.

"You've been quiet for an hour. I'm worried."

"Bryson's office pulled our SFO contract this morning."

The tray stopped halfway.

"The crew lounges? That's a third of what we sell."

"Yes."

"That coward." She set the tray down. "He's cancelling your pastries because you saw his girlfriend's vacation pictures?"

"He's cancelling them because I wouldn't take off a ring."

Bridget's eyes dropped to my left hand.

She screamed.

It was a short scream, and the whole line turned around.

"Levi?" she said, in a normal voice. "Tall, serious, makes tea? That Levi?"

"That Levi."

"Oh my God. I always said he looked at you like a dog looks at a sandwich."

"Bridget."

"In the best possible way."

She hugged me across the counter with her whole forearms.

"Okay. We lose the contract and we gain a wedding. I can work with that."

I laughed, and it felt good in my chest.

Levi sat at the corner table by the window with a coffee and a laptop, where I could see him.

He had said he would stay until he was sure I was fine, and then he had gone on staying.

At a quarter past eleven, the bell on the door rang, and Bridget stopped talking mid-sentence.

Lydia stood in the doorway in a black dress and dark glasses.

She was holding her phone up in front of her, camera facing out.

She took the glasses off slowly. Her eyes were red.
