Chapter 13: First Pick
Harvest started Monday at six, with the dew still on the grass and the sky the color of dishwater.
Abram showed up at the end of my row at five minutes to, in a clean flannel and boots that had never seen a ladder.
Dessa stood beside him in her raincoat, with a bucket nearly as big as she was.
"I'm here to work," Abram said. "My mother in law, my daughter, and your mother all said so."
"Your mother in law said so?"
"She called at nine last night to ask if I owned gloves."
"Do you?"
He held up a pair of gloves with the tags still on.
I took them, snipped the tags, and handed them back.
"Early Transparents," I said, and pulled down a branch.
The apples hung small and pale yellow, almost clear in the early light.
"They don't keep," I said. "They bruise if you look at them."
"We pick them in a week and sell them in a day."
"And Ma makes sauce out of whatever's left."
"Why grow them?"
"Because for ten days in August they're the best apple in the county. Bite one."
