Chapter 24: Boring
The first thing I did on Tuesday was take a pill.
It was small and white and part of breakfast now.
Jasper stood at the counter in his socks, reading the bin schedule.
He wore the face of a man defusing a bomb.
"It's recycling," I said. "It's always recycling."
"It was garbage last week."
"Last week was garbage. This week is recycling. That's the whole system."
Pickle lay across the kitchen doorway on his one good side, eleven years old and still not dead.
The vet had given him a year, in October.
He had apparently decided to ignore her.
At noon I was at my desk in the studio over the bakery.
It had eleven desks now, and a quiet man in the corner with his own stapler.
The youngest of them leaned in the door.
"There's a man downstairs who says he's early for the wedding," she said.
He stood at the bottom of the back stairs with a gray cap in both hands.
He was seventy-four, thin, and neat, in a jacket that had been pressed for the occasion.
"Miss Larkin," he said. "I won't stay. I only didn't want to meet you in a crowd."
I knew before he said another word.
