Chapter 11: The Garden Club
Marjorie sat on Greta's front steps at seven in the morning with a covered dish on her knees and a smile fixed in place.
Tobias had driven me, and he stayed in the car with the window down and his hand loose on the wheel.
Greta stood on the top step in her robe with her arms crossed.
"She's been here since three," Greta said. "I offered her a coffee, and she said she'd rather freeze."
"Ingrid, dear," Marjorie said, rising with the dish. "I made the lasagna you like."
"I've never liked your lasagna."
"Well. Lane does."
I stopped three steps below her.
"What do you want?"
"For this to end quietly." Her smile wobbled. "A letter went to your office. Lane only wants what's fair. You sign the consent for the stock, and he drops the whole matter."
"The whole matter."
"The police, the videos. Chantal will say she was joking." She lowered her voice. "A wife shares, dear. You'll understand when you're older."
Greta made a sound.
I took my phone out of my pocket and held it where Marjorie could see the screen.
The red dot was on.
"I'd like you to say that again," I said. "At lunch. In front of your friends."
Her smile froze.
"You have the garden club at noon on Tuesdays. Lane told me once, in the car. Twenty women and a string of pearls each."
"Ingrid, I don't think."
"I'll sign whatever you like, with everyone watching. Isn't that how a family settles things?"
She stared at me.
She was a woman who loved a witness, and I watched her calculate how good a story this would make.
