Chapter 15: The Night Shift
The net shed smelled of tar and river.
The lantern Zhuyuan was meant to be carving lay forgotten on the floor in a curl of pearwood shavings.
Steward Ma and Xiaohe were in on it now.

The lamp was a candle stub on a barrel, and it made her skin gold and his eyes black.
"Look at you," he said quietly. "Lying in a fishing net like the best catch on the river."
"That's terrible."
"It's true. I would declare a festival."
She hooked her heels behind his thighs and pulled him the last inch, and the net swung forward to meet him.
