Chapter 16: A Ship at Mid-Autumn
The Chair had taken the temple guest room, refused a cake, and said only, "The Trials begin when I say so."
So that night they climbed to the drying loft, the only room in the Hearth House without a goat.
Xiaohe had hung paper lanterns for the Fair from the rafters, a dozen of them, red and gold, turning slowly in the warm air.
A thick quilt from the gift pile lay over the boards, and the window stood open on the river.
Luoyi lay on it with her head on his chest and the moon-yeast letter folded in her fist.
"Say one thing you want," she said. "Out loud. Just one."
He was quiet for a long breath under her cheek.
"My year," said Zhuyuan. "The river, spring to sea. And you in it."
"That's two."
"It's one very long one."
"Mine is the yeast," she said. "I want it so badly I could chew the ship."
"Then we trade. One request each."
She sat up and looked down at him.
"Come with me," she said. "On the ship. You've never seen the sea, and your map stops at the river mouth."
His face did something slow and wide.
"Yes," he said, and his voice cracked. "That one is easy."
"Your turn."
"Come back with me," he said. "When the ship returns. Walk the Ninefold from the spring, a whole year of it, with me."
"Yes," said Luoyi. "Both."
He reached for her, and she caught his wrist and pressed it back down to the quilt.
"No," she said. "Tonight I want your mouth. Lie still."
He went flat at once and looked up at her with his lips parted.
She stood over him on the quilt, a foot on either side of his ribs, and untied her sash.
She let the robe fall off her shoulders and drop behind her.
The lanterns threw red light down her body.
