Chapter 15: The Seating Chart
My case sat on the bed in the room across from Dario's, exactly where I had left it.
I knelt and ran my thumb along the lining.
The stitches were mine, small and even, in navy thread.
Except for the last two inches, which were a hair too tight and a shade too dark.
Someone had opened the seam, taken out eleven pages, copied them, and sewn them back.
I sat on my heels and counted the pages twice.
All eleven were there.
That was the worst part.
Silvio hadn't needed to steal them.
He only needed me to know he could.
I carried the case down the hall and knocked on Dario's door.
He opened it in yesterday's shirt, with shadows under his eyes.
It was the first time he had looked straight at me since the church.
"The house has ears," I said, and showed him the seam.
He touched it with one finger.
"Pop's staff," he said. "Or the drivers."
