Chapter 21: Ask Me Properly
He did not answer me in the garden.
He stood up with me in his arms and carried me across the cold lawn.
He took me in through the kitchen and up the back stairs two at a time.
My coat fell somewhere on the way.
His mouth never left my neck.
"Adriano, you didn't say anything."
"I'm going to," he said against my pulse. "Not on a bench. Not in the dirt."
He kicked the bedroom door shut and set me on my feet beside the bed.
The fire he had laid that morning was down to red coals, and the room glowed.
He took the pins out of my hair one at a time and dropped them on the floor.
He unzipped my dress down my back, slowly, the way he had in Buffalo.
I stood still and let him.
The wool pooled around my ankles.
I was in nothing but my bra, and his mouth went to the swell of my breast above the lace.
"Take it off," I said. "All of it."
He undid the clasp, and the bra slid down my arms.
He knelt in front of me, in his suit, and kissed my belly, and I put my hands in his hair.
