Bound to My Mafia Stepuncle novel · Chapter 32 of 32
Chapter 32: Ours
I put on my scrubs over the strip of wedding tape.
Angelo drove the Schuylkill at six in the morning with one hand on my knee.
Neither of us said a word.
The car was waiting at the Gladwyne gate with its engine running.
The crane operator's wife sat behind the wheel in her housecoat.
He was in the passenger seat with his head against the window, breathing in short, wet pulls.
I knew that sound.
We wheeled him in through the new ramp and down the hall to the first room.
The hospital bed was already made under the old carved headboard.
The window over the garden was full of morning.
I gave him something real for the air hunger, out of my own scrub pocket.
In twenty minutes his hands let go of the blanket.
He looked up at me.
"You got married yesterday," he said.
"I did."
"Why are you here?"
"Somebody should be awake with you," I said. "Nobody likes to go in the dark by themselves."
