Chapter 8: Trustee
The lawyer came through the kitchen door at ten past one in the morning.
He was a small gray man in a raincoat over pajama pants, carrying a leather bag.
Behind him came a young man from his office, yawning, and the housekeeper in her gray cardigan.
The band had gone home.
The tent was dark.
Somewhere down the hall, my mother was asleep in the blue guest room.
Domenic had told her on their wedding night that his back was bad.
The lawyer set his bag on the foot of the carved bed and looked at me.
"Who's this?"
"My nurse," Domenic said. "Stay, Riley."
"Domenic, this is a private..."
"She stays."
The lawyer opened his bag.
I went to stand by the window.
Angelo leaned against the wall by the door with his arms crossed and his split knuckles wrapped in a dish towel.
Domenic didn't waste his breath on paper talk.
He'd been planning this for weeks.
He told it.
"When I go, my vote in the company goes into a trust. One trustee. Whoever that trustee names inside thirty days sits in my chair. Runs the port. Runs all of it."
"And if the trustee doesn't name anyone?" the lawyer said, writing.
"Then my old will stands, and Paulie gets everything."
The lawyer's pen stopped.
"Who's the trustee?"
Domenic looked at Angelo.
Angelo shook his head before anybody said a word.
"He already asked me," Angelo said to me. "In August. I told him to go to hell."
"He said it nicer," Domenic said.
"I said it exactly like that."
"So who is it?" the lawyer said.
Domenic turned his yellow eyes to the window.

It took me a second to understand.
