"You are not going," said Rorik.
"I'm going."
"He wants you alone so he can kill you."
"He wants me alone so he can talk first."
"What?"
"He's been talking since the day I met him," I said. "He can't help it."
I pulled my cloak off the peg and tied my pouch under it.
My scalpel went into my left boot.
Rorik stood in the middle of the room with his fists clenched, and I could hear his heart without touching him.
It hurt to listen to.
"If you die..." he started.
"Then you do, and he has the throne.
"I know.
"That's why I'm going to be very difficult to kill."
"Take Embla."
"A quarter mile behind me, and quiet," I said. "Brack with her."
"And me."
"You stay in the tower."
"Hedda."
"If you set one foot outside this keep, a man with a crossbow has the king in his sights in the open.
