Chapter 23: Undone

I carried the charter up to the Wolf Tower in both arms.

Rorik walked beside me.

Neither of us said anything on the stairs.

The apprentice came up an hour later, slowly, one hand on the rail.

She set the cracked cup on the table by the fire and laid out the bone knife beside it.

"The words are the same," she said. "Spoken backward, in the same breath.

"The blood is the same.

"The cup takes it."

"And then?" I said.

"And then the Moon lets go.

"You are two people with nothing between you.

"A king who lives or dies by his own luck.

"A healer who is free to go wherever her feet take her."

She looked at Rorik with her milky eyes.

"And he can no longer be killed by a knife in a stranger's hand, child.

"That is a great deal to give up."

"I know," I said.

Rorik was sitting at the edge of the bed with his hands hanging between his knees.

"It's yours," he said. "It always was."

"I know that too."

"I won't stop you either way."

"I know you won't."

I looked at the cup.

I thought of the king on the day of the oath.
