Chapter 16: Thirty Thousand Feet
"The same thing that happens to the Alpha," Mickey said.
"Fever. Blood. Then we both go down."
The man with the scar shrugged through the bars.
"Then one of you goes down in New York."
Vin looked at the blood soaking through Mickey's sweater on his arm.
"I'll refuse," he said.
"Refuse and you lose your claim."
"Then I lose it."
"And then your uncle raises my son." Mickey held Vin's arm tighter. "That's the law. The Lisi man said it at the Table. You lose your claim, my baby goes to Pietro the day he's born."
Vin didn't answer.
He knew Mickey was right.
They left the three of them in the cage.
Vin called his driver, who came with two quiet men and a first-aid kit, and stitched Vin's arm at the bar while Mickey held the light.
Nobody slept.
At ten in the morning, the back room of Bianchi's was full again.
Not every chair this time. Enough.
The Lisi boss, the old men, Pietro at the head with a fresh pocket square.
The three men from the cage were nowhere.
Vin stood at his chair with his sleeve buttoned over the bandage.
Mickey stood beside him, not against the wall.
Nobody told him to move.
"Vincenzo," Pietro said. "The Table has business for you."
He laid it out.
A sit-down in Brooklyn with a New York Family, over a shipping debt from his brother's time.
Three days.
The heir goes himself, to show the Table he can carry the Family's business.
"And since he'll be traveling," the Lisi boss said, bored, "we'll hear his confirmation at the December moon. Christmas Eve. Once New York says he did it right."
A month.
Pietro had bought himself a whole month.
"I'll go," Vin said.
Pietro smiled. "Good."
"And I'm going with him," Mickey said.
The room turned.
Pietro's smile stayed on, but it went thin.
