Vin nodded once.
He didn't say okay.
"Then I'll be across the street," he said. "With the chair."
"You have two chairs now."
"The second one's for when you know."
Somebody at the Table coughed into his fist.
Nonna hit the walnut with her cane.
"Enough," she said. "It's Christmas Eve. Everybody eat."
So twenty Families ate lasagna in the back room of Bianchi's, under the pale square where the clock used to hang.
Mickey ate two plates sitting down.
Vin ate one, sitting beside his grandmother, barefoot under the Table.
In January a judge denied Pietro bail.
The man with the scar took a deal and told the detective about the dart, the van and the warehouse.
Pietro's company sold Mickey's building to pay his lawyers.
Mickey bought it with the money the Don's will left his family.
Six years of their work.
He didn't feel guilty about one dollar of it.
On the fifteenth of January a sign painter stood on a ladder on Milwaukee Avenue with a tiny brush and a pot of gold.
