Chapter 10: Marisa

A gray sedan came up the gravel road at ten.

Rafe was at the window with the gun before I'd finished buttoning my jeans.

"One car," he said. "One driver."

Then he lowered the gun.

"It's your aunt."

Marisa climbed out of the back seat in a long wool coat and flat shoes.

Her reading glasses hung on their chain, and a leather purse hung on her arm.

A big man in a dark overcoat got out of the driver's side.

She looked at the broken window, the bullet holes in the siding and the dried blood on the porch step.

"Well," she said. "It's worse than I thought."

I met her on the lawn.

She took my face in both hands and looked at me hard, up and down, with her mouth tight.

"You're not hurt."

"No."

"Good." She kissed my forehead. "Where's the man?"

"In the cellar."

"My driver will see to him."

The driver nodded and went in without a word.

"You came all the way here," I said.

"I came to tell you three things, and I wouldn't say them on a phone."

She walked into the cabin and sat at the kitchen table among the broken glass.

Rafe stayed by the door.

"First," Marisa said.

"The wedding has moved. It's Saturday, November seventh now.
