Chapter 19: The Hospital
The room was on the eighth floor, at the end of a hall that smelled of floor wax.
My father lay in the bed with a tube in his nose and his silver hair flat against the pillow.
He looked smaller.
He looked like a man I could have carried.
Marisa stood at the foot of the bed with her glasses in her hand.
When she saw me, she took my face between her palms, kissed me once, and went out and closed the door.
Rafe stayed in the corridor.
He had walked me as far as the nurses' desk and stopped, because he no longer had a right to the other side.
I stood at the bed with my arms folded.
"Sit," my father said.
"I'll stand."
"You'll want to sit."
I sat.
He took a slow breath, and the machine beside him ticked.
"It's in my pancreas," he said. "They found it in August. I have seen four doctors, and none of them used the word years."
I didn't say anything.
I couldn't.
