Chapter 20: The Last Word
I gave Rafe the ring in the hospital corridor at three in the morning.
He looked at it in my palm.
"I don't work for your father," he said. "I don't work for you."
"I know. Put out your hand."
"Livia."
"I'm not hiring you. I'm giving you back what my father took in front of forty men."
He held out his left hand.
I pushed the plain gold band onto his finger, and it went over the knuckle with a small catch.
He closed his fist around it.
"Stay in the hall," I said. "He'll want you."
"He fired me."
"He fired you a few hours ago. Do as you're told."
The corner of his mouth moved.
He stayed.
My father lasted until Saturday night.
By then the room was full of flowers he hadn't asked for and a smell I tried not to notice.
Marisa sat on one side of the bed and I sat on the other, and the machine beside him counted slowly.
