Chapter 6: Orders

My father called for Rafe at eight in the morning.

He didn't call for me.

I stood outside the study with my ear against the door, and I heard nothing but the clock.

Marisa found me there.

She was already dressed, in a gray cardigan with her reading glasses on their chain, and she took one look at my face.

"Come have coffee," she said.

"I want to hear."

"You'll hear it in the kitchen, from him. Come."

She was right.

Ten minutes later Rafe walked into the kitchen with his jacket buttoned and his face wiped clean of everything.

He didn't sit.

"He isn't firing me," he said.

I put down my cup.

"What?"

"He knows about last night. Silvio called him at six. He called Silvio a liar and a drunk."

"He did?"

"Then he asked me, and I said no."

He said it without a flicker.

"You lied to him," I said.

"To the Don. Yes."

Marisa made a small sound into her coffee.

"He believed it?" I said.

"He wanted to," Rafe said. "That's not the same thing."

He took an envelope off the counter and set it in front of me.

Inside was a printed itinerary and a key.

"You and I are leaving at noon," he said.

"A cabin on Lake Geneva, in Wisconsin. Your father's, under a dead cousin's name.
